Baroque Style for Strings is the first of our MusicWorkshops.

It will take place on October 7th between 10am and 6pm.

There are places still available – particularly for 2nd Violins, Viola and Cello (just one seat left for cellos).

You will get a day of music making, explanation, expert tuition and lots of interesting and useful tips.

Tutors: Persephone Gibbs and Andrew Wilson-Dickson (Directors of Devon Baroque), and side by side playing with Devon Baroque orchestra section leaders.

Book soon so you have time to look at the music before the day!

Baroque Style for Strings

A little more info on our first workshop of the series – Baroque Style for Strings.

The two morning sessions will focus on Phrasing & Rhetoric in Baroque music, and Dance Rhythms & bowing.  The afternoon sessions will be putting all that lovely new skill and understanding into practice with (most likely, but not set in stone quite yet!) a Purcell Suite and some dance movements from a Bach Suite.

Hope this whets your appetite – places available in all sections.  Why not book yourself a treat of a day?

Update on course content

MusicWorkshops is pleased to be able to give an update on the course content for the Introduction to Middle Eastern Music day.

The day will be divided into 1.5 hour sessions, with breaks for refreshment, conversation and food!

Session 1: Will focus on the intriguing rhythm system of music from the Middle East

Session 2: Will be about the pitch system (the Maquaam)

Session 3: Will explore the system around improvisation – a very special aspect of the musical culture

Session 4: Will be using this new knowledge to learn forms and compositions

We will then have a the opportunity to play through everything that has been covered.

It will be a really exciting, exploring day.  Open to any type of instrument, do book your place (and let us know your instrument) for a day of wonderful music making and learning from a wonderful, varied and beautiful musical culture.

Getting Ready

We are getting ourselves ready for the first workshop of the series.  Yes, I know, it’s in October, and seems a lifetime away as well all enjoy the sunshine and warmth of a particularly good example of ‘Blazing June’.  However, truth be told, it’s not so far away, and to make it a fabulous experience for all participants, we are working hard to prepare music, as well as making numerous lists about what needs to be done!

If you have thought, ‘ooh, that sounds great’. Or ‘I’d like to have a go at that’, let us know sooner rather than later!  We still have places available for ‘Baroque Style for String Players’ on October 7th, but they are limited, so don’t leave it too late!

Once we have our complete group, we will send out full details of the course, and the music to practice.  This will happen around a month before the workshop, to give participants time to practice.  SO, book before September to make sure you get your place
